Run 3 Characters: How Each One Unlocks and Plays
Published · Updated · 3 min read
Who you can play as
Run 3 starts you as the Runner. Everyone else is bought in the in-game shop with power cells, and several of them can also be earned for free. The costs and unlock notes below come straight from the shop screen and the character data in the game build hosted here, so they match what you will see when you open the shop.
Unlock costs and free routes
| Character | Shop price | Free unlock |
|---|---|---|
| Runner | Starter | Available from the start |
| Skater | 300 | Finish Level 10 in Explore Mode |
| Lizard | 600 | Finish Level 40 in Explore Mode |
| Bunny | 2,000 | Earn any 8 achievements |
| Child | 2,000 | Beat the Low-Power Tunnel |
| Gentleman | 2,000 | Shop only |
| Duplicator | 6,000 | Shop only |
| Pastafarian | 6,000 | Shop only |
| Student | 10,000 | Shop only |
| Angel | 12,000 | Shop only |
The shop marks the Duplicator and the Pastafarian as temporarily unavailable at certain points in the story: you can own them, but they cannot be used until they return. Some Explore paths also limit who may enter. The Way Back, for example, only lets in the Angel, Bunny, Child, Duplicator and Pastafarian.
What each runner does
- Runner: the game's tips say she performs best on the ground, where she runs and changes direction faster than anyone else. Release jump quickly for a low hop.
- Skater: the fastest of the people in the tunnels. Ramps turn speed into jump height, and he gets the most out of them.
- Lizard: jumps very high and, in the game's words, does not understand the concept of jumping low. Useful for tall gaps, awkward for short ones.
- Bunny: bounces constantly. Each bounce speeds it up a little, so small bounces build speed and high jumps slow it down.
- Child: light and slower on the ground. He carries a balloon that lets him float down after ramps and boxes.
- Gentleman: has an electromagnet sewn into his hat. Switching it on pulls him toward a nearby power cell. The tips advise waiting until he falls below the cell so the pull sends him upward, and turning the magnet off if a cell would fling him into space.
- Duplicator: makes copies of himself and can swap places with any copy. Duplicates jump higher than he does, can jump off each other in midair, and can change the tunnel's gravity like any solid object.
- Pastafarian: can run across empty space on a bridge of light, which she credits to the Flying Spaghetti Monster.
- Student: slower and less athletic, but she can switch gravity herself to get around obstacles.
- Angel: has a dash. Dashing into a ramp gives a big boost and restores the dash, and pressing jump after a dash slows him down.
Costumes
The shop also sells costume sets that change a character's look and handling. The winter costumes (the Skier and the Ice Skater) cost 500 each or unlock for free when you beat the Winter Games. The Halloween costumes (the Jack-o'-Lantern and the Ghost) cost 750 or unlock by beating the Low-Power Tunnel. A pirate costume costs 1,000.
Choosing who to use
One of the game's loading tips sums it up: everyone has strengths and weaknesses, so if you are stuck, try a different character. Many achievements are also tied to a specific runner, such as "Hat Trick" (beat Level 2 as the Gentleman with only the jump button) or "Coming Full Circle" (travel all the way around Level 35 as the Runner), which gives you a reason to try each one.
